QuaDelay Delay-Scaper (AUv3) Review

QuaDelay is an audio effect plugin that operates both as a standalone application and within any AU-compatible host, such as Logic or GarageBand.

Overview

QuaDelay offers a stereo delay effect characterized by four independent delay lines, which enable users to craft intriguing and immersive "delay-scapes." It diverges from traditional ping-pong delays, steering clear of tempo-synchronized quarter note triplets and dotted eighths. Instead, QuaDelay is better suited for those interested in lush, ambient delay effects that transcend standard delay applications.

Parameters

• Active: This toggles the effect on or off. Notably, when deactivated, the delay repeats remain audible, as the input signal ceases to engage with the delay processing—similar to the "trails" feature found in many delay units.
• Delay: Configures the base delay time between 100ms and 8 seconds, with other delays emerging contingent on the Ratios setting.
• Ratios: Adjusts the timing of the remaining three delay lines. The 2:3:4 setting is notably rhythmic, utilizing the formula 1-(1/x) to yield ratios of 50%, 67%, and 75%. In this case, with a base delay of 1000ms, the delays occur at 1000ms, 500ms, 667ms, and 750ms. The Gold and Silver Ratios are derived from prime numbers and their mathematical counterparts.
• Regen: Controls the regeneration or feedback of repeats up to 100% for "endless" repeats. High regen levels may produce a degraded sound quality reminiscent of analog delays, creating a "washed-out" auditory experience. Internal compression and limiting manage excessive buildup, allowing characteristic squashing of repeats at extreme settings.
• Mod: Introduces variable stereo modulation to the delayed output.
• LPF: Modulates the cutoff frequency of a lowpass filter applied to the delay repeats; reducing this setting results in darker echoes.
• Dry: Adjusts the amount of the dry/input signal incorporated into the output stage; it can be completely muted if desired.
• Wet: Regulates the overall level of the generated delay effects.
• Reverb: Applies expansive stereo reverb to blend both Dry and Wet outputs. Reducing the Wet level allows QuaDelay to function as a straightforward reverb effect.
